EAL(English as an Additional Language)and assessment test

English proficiency is not mandatory until the later stages of elementary school, but as the students advance to higher grades, those with limited English skills may find it difficult to participate in classes. Many international schools provide remedial English classes, often referred to as EAL (English as an Additional Language). It’s advisable to inquire beforehand about the types of EAL classes available at your preferred school and their corresponding costs.
If you are a secondary (junior high school student) or above, classes tend to become more challenging in preparation for university. If you struggle to keep pace with these classes, you risk being excluded from entrance tests, limiting your options for enrollment in schools. The number of schools offering remedial English classes is decreasing, and when they are offered, it’s often in the form of a teacher providing support by sitting alongside the student during class, making them more expensive.
Prior to enrollment, it is advisable to verify the class format(private, small, or large group), how many times per week, and the subject areas covered. (1 Baht 4 Yen as of 2023.1))

The frequency and class size of English language support classes vary between elementary and junior high schools. Some schools provide English as an Additional Language (EAL) support up to Year 10, though the number is quite limited. These schools also tend to have a larger proportion of students who are non-native English speakers.

For non-native English-speaking families, the primary purpose of enrolling children in an international school is typ;ically to facilitate their English language learning. Therefore, your satisfaction with the English remedial classes directly impacts your overall satisfaction with the school. Students who study hard at home tend to make faster progress.
