Year Group

British-style schools dominate the Bangkok International School landscape, followed by the American-style schools, and a smaller presence of Singaporean and Australian-style schools.

Which grade your child belongs to depends on the curriculum. Providing your child’s date of birth and checking the grade level is important before attending school tours.

Curriculum

British Curriculum

①Primary School (6 years)
②Secondary School(5 years)
③Sixth Form (A-Level(1.5years)ORFoundation(1
year)

The British Curriculum focuses on creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability. It sets achievable goals to build on past learning and prepare students for the future. This student-centered approach provides a well-rounded education with thorough coverage of subjects. Recognized worldwide, it is endorsed by educational institutions, universities, and employers.

If your child hasn’t reached the appropriate age yet, please consider whether the school environment aligns with your child’s personality. For instance, if your child likes music, maybe there is a brass band club or sports club they can engage in through after-school activities. The priority is to ensure they have an enjoyable experience.

The British system allows the students to choose their own subjects as they progress through the grades, enabling them to make early decisions on what they want to do in the future and develop their skills accordingly. By the time they graduate from high school, they will undergo general education classes. However, transitioning to different paths can be challenging if the student’s aspirations change later on.

American Curriculum

①Elementary School(5years)
②Middle School(3years)
③High School(4years

The American curriculum is renowned for its broad approach, high standards, and diverse activities. It’s based on the Common Core State Standards, allowing schools to personalize education. Key benefits include nurturing talents, fostering critical skills, and global recognition, enabling smooth transitions between schools. International accreditation ensures quality. Parents should consider factors like AP courses and staff qualifications. Ultimately, the suitability of the American Curriculum depends on individual needs, but it’s a respected system preparing students for success worldwide.

For example, students who transfer from middle school or high school to an intermediary school may encounter difficulties if Engl;ish is not their first language. Many children start at a lower grade level. This situation concerns many Asian parents who worry that it might delay their child’s graduation by a year or two and consequently delaying college enrollment. In such cases, the American curriculum allows students to skip a grade or graduate early if they work very hard.

International Baccalaureate

①PYP-Primary Years Programme(6years)
②MYP-Middle Years Programme(5years)
③DP-Diploma Programme(2years)

The International Baccalaureate (IB) provides a standardized curriculum for students to move between schools worldwide with ease. It aims to give students a global perspective and prepare them for responsible action in the future. The IB program fosters critical thinking, creativity, and analytical skills, encouraging students to apply these skills in real-world scenarios.

The British approach appears to be the most academically focused program, with grading primarily based on exam performances. Both British and Singaporean styles lean towards academic performance. On the other hand, American and Australian approaches seem to focus on nurturing individuality and imagination. In contrast, the American approach emphasizes intense studying starting from junior high school.

have heard that IBDP for university entrance exams is more difficult than A-level because it involves studying more subjects and requires more writing. Additionally, students who may not meet the academic requirements for the IB course may be advised by the school to consider changing schools.

Australian Curriculum

①Primary School (6years)
②Secondary School(4years)
③Sixth form

The Australian Curriculum is characterized as a comprehensive and demanding educational framework spanning from kindergarten to high school. Within this framework, students are afforded opportunities to delve into their passions and skills, broaden their understanding, and achieve excellence through an internationally acknowledged Senior Certificate. It is an adaptable and rigorous educational framework designed to cater to the requirements of a dynamic, globally-oriented, and culturally diverse society. It paves the way for students to pursue further education at universities not only in Australia but also in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and various other countries globally.

Some schools follow an Australian-style curriculum for elementary school but transition to a British-style approach for junior high school. I’ve heard that students might experience a bit of confusion when they encounter a strict and serious teacher in the British style after previously being accustomed to a more relaxed and cheerful teaching style.

It’s just my opinion, but….

Summary

While the curriculum holds importance for kindergarten and elementary school students, it’s advisable to also consider factors like diversity of nationalities, accessibility from home, the school’s responsiveness to issues, and class size when narrowing down school options. In particular, considering the traffic congestion in Bangkok, it’s especially recommended that young children attend a school located near their home.

For children in junior high school and beyond, choosing a school that aligns with their future academic aspirations is important. Additionally, it is important to note that the grading system may vary depending on whether the curriculum follows a British or American style.

We hope that your precious child will find a school where he/she can have a good time in an unfamiliar environment. If you’re uncertain about which school to choose, please contact Bangkok IntaSupport for a counseling session and for further information.

International schools in Thailand offer Thai language lessons for both Thais and foreigners 2to3 times a week. The scheduling and curriculum specifics vary form one school to another.

I think it is also very important whether you could picture your child enjoying their times at the school, not just through the website, but also by physically visiting the campus, experiencing the school environment, interacting with students, and sensing the atmosphere
