Commuting Options

Students use the school bus for their daily commute to and from school.

Parents are responsible for taking their children to and from school.

Junior high and high school students typically commute independently, using apartment shuttle buses and/or the BTS train system.

They may opt to use the bus company associated with the school for transportation services.

Depending on the location of your husband’s workplace, I would recommend living close to the school given the severe traffic congestion in Bangkok. Despite many people living in Phrom Phong and commuting to suburban areas, the traffic in Bangkok is very congested. Particularly on Fridays and on days of road flooding, travel times to school can be two to three times longer than usual. This puts a heavy burden on children who have homework and lessons to do after school. Additionally, living far from the school can hinder children’s ability to socialize with friends after school.

For these reasons, international schools around Asoke, Phrom Phong, Thonglor, and Ekamai are popular among expats.

Many Thai schools cater to parents who personally transport their children, with limited or no school bus services available. It is advisable to inquire with the school regarding transportation options. Even if a school bus service is provided, it often costs 80,000 to 100,000 baht (about 300,000 to 400,000 yen per year) depending on the residential location.

One factor which trouble students reaching schools is their transportation fee. Since Montree is dominating the bus industry in Bangkok we don’t have cheaper alternative to commute to school.

However, secondary students can take the subway or walk to school if they live nearby. For some they prefer to ride on a motor taxi which is way more affordable and faster. But it might put the student’s life in danger.

I have the impression that many people use Google Maps to look for schools from the comfort of their homes and find options within a 30-minute radius(standard commute time). In that case, it might be better to anticipate a 30-minute journey there, 60 minutes for the return trip due to traffic congestion, or possibly even 90 minutes during peak traffic periods.

There are some positive aspects to it. I think it would be beneficial for parents to have a bus service rather than having to handle transportation themselves. This is a common practice in Bangkok, where different classes offer bus services for pick-up and drop-off.

Very popular service!
